3 Historical Fashion Editors I Admire

As a student who love fashion and want to be fashion journalist in the future, I would like to talk about 3 historical fashion editors that I have admired. Each editor has played a huge role in the field of fashion during the period and now known as most influential fashion editors.

1. Diana Vreeland

Diana Vreeland was a fashion columnist and editor during mid-20th century. She worked for Harper’s Bazaar from 1936 to 1962. Then, she left Bazaar and became editor-in-chief of Vogue in 1963. Under her guidance, Vogue started to feature a bizarre and outrageous fashion photography by reflecting the age of youth culture and the overthrow of traditional standards. Through her work at Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue, she became one of the most perspicacious and influential fashion observers. In 1971, she was removed from editor-in-chief, and she worked as a consultant for the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

2. Franca Sozzani

Since 1988, Franca Sozzani has been the groundbreaking editor of Vogue Italia. As a huge supporter of the democratization of fashion, she regularly styles fast fashion with luxury on her pages. She has also been instrumental in supporting all ethnicities and sizes when it comes to models: Sozzani has featured multiple plus-sized models on covers, devoted an entire issue to all-black models and an issue of L'Uomo Vogue to African culture.

3. Anna Wintour

As Editor-in-Chief of Vogue, Anna Wintour transformed the magazine into a cultural phenomenon. She popularized high fashion for a new generation of women when she was brought in as editor in 1987—her first cover pictured a carefree pregnant woman mixing high and low fashion with lots of costume jewelry. Wintour shifted the whole culture of fashion into something young women were inspired by, making Vogue a mainstay for a new demographic. Her focus has always been on fashion as a lifestyle.
