Another Big Sustainable Movement: Fashion Revolution

Fashion Revolution Week has come to Singapore with its #whomademyclothes campaign. Fashion Revolution was initially born to mourn and remember those workers who were killed or injured by the Rana Plaza factory collapse on 24th April 2013. During this week, brands and suppliers are encouraged to add a hashtag #whomademyclothes and show a transparent supply chain. A pop-up event was held on 27th April 2019 at Design Orchard together with ‘TAFF(Textile And Fashion Federation,’ ‘The Fashion Pulpit,’ ‘Rentadella,’ and ‘Style Tribute,’ ‘Zerrin,’ ‘Raffles College Of Higher Education,’ and ‘Lasalle College Of The Arts.’

On 26th April, as a preparation of a popup event, my classmates and I decorated the event space with different props. A major installation idea was to hang clothes borrowed from The Fashion Pulpit, a sustainable fashion brand that upcycles, tailors, and sells second-hand clothes. The clothes were hung on racks attached on the ceiling by a similar tone of colors. Through this installation, we wanted to show that upcycled or second-hand clothes could look good and stylish. The other installations are a game station to learn about sustainable fashion and a design gallery of sustainable clothes made by Raffles students.

On 27th April, I volunteered for the event during the day time, and I was in charge of navigating and engaging with visitors. I explained the overall concept of the space and how to play the game. At 6 pm, a fashion show started with a row of models wearing cool outfits from The Fashion Pulpit, Cittadella, and Style Tribute. The latter two brands also support sustainable fashion by encouraging people to rent clothes rather than buying.

After the event, I learned that sustainable fashion is becoming a big issue in Singapore. For the last few months, I had many opportunities to learn sustainability through many events and school projects. I can see that more and more people get to know the importance of sustainability and a green movement. They would like to get educated and join the movement. I hope to participate in more green events in the future.
