Updated: Aug 20, 2018

Today, I will talk about history of fashion publication which has been with us for a long time. Fashion publication is one platform of fashion journalism. ‘Fashion Journalism’ refers to all aspects of published fashion media; consist of fashion journalists, fashion critics, and fashion reporters. Then, when did journalism start?

Before newspaper, there were two forms of journals; one is ‘handwritten news sheets’ and the other is ‘single item news publication’. The two forms of journals appeared during the Roman Empire and Han Dynasty for the first time. In 1605, the world’s first newspaper, “The Relation”, was published in Germany.

How did fashion publication start? The world’s first fashion magazine, “Gallant Mercury”, was created by a man for men in 1677. Soon enough fever over the fashion magazine came across Europe, and 16 years later, in 1693, the first specialized magazine for women, “Ladies' Mercury”, appeared in London. During the period, those magazines and fashion trends were controlled and adopted by the upper class as a garment was handmade by a dressmaker. In mid 1770s, however, sewing machine was invented and the first RTW(Ready-To-Wear) garment was mass-produced for army in 1812. After that, RTW fashion became increasingly popular for women by 1876. In 1892, the first ‘Vogue’ was published, and journalism became more popular after publication of Vogue.
