More and More Retail Business is adopting RFID

Updated: Aug 26, 2018

On 16th August, I had a special meeting with Mr.Kelvin Chee who has ventured into the fashion retail. He was born raised in a family dealing with the tailoring business. He grew up in the factory and retail environment. Using his valuable experience, he established himself in a retail business. He owns a company named “Decks Pte Ltd”, one of the leading apparel supplier in departmental stores in Singapore. According to him, he adopted and tried numerous new technologies inspired to provide a unique and better shopping environment for both customers and a store manager. ‘RFID’ is one example.

What is ‘RFID’ then? RFID stands for radio-frequency identification that uses electromagnetic fields to identify and track tags attached to an item. Kelvin adopted this amazing technology to his retail stores, which enables a store manager to count and manage stocks conveniently. Holding a RFID scanner, he can simply pass by the items hanging on a rack. Then, the scanner count the number of stocks by identifying tags attached on the items. With this brand new technology, he came up with 'BITM(Bring It To Me)' which is offering self checkout service to customers. It enables them to simply scan items at a kiosk in a fitting room and check out on their own. After check out, the store staff will bring new stocks to them. Customers also can scan their body with the kiosk, check other items available for their sizes in the store and click a button to ask staffs to bring them to the fitting room. Doesn't it sound so interesting and convenient?

At the end of the meeting, I did appreciate Mr.Kelvin for sharing his precious experience and ideas. It was very beneficial for me because I got to learn how retail business is changing and adapting to new technologies. Also, his speech let me think that I should be more interested and study about new trends or technologies to keep my pace up with the fast-changing retail business.
