‘Say Ocean’ Exhibition By Jeremy Sharma

On 7th May 2019, I went to a ‘Say Ocean’ exhibition at Esplanade Tunnel by Jeremy Sharma, which is my second time seeing his exhibition. Jeremy Sharma is a multidisciplinary artist who looks for aesthetics both in visuals and sounds. He explores visual and sound elements such as voice, light, film, music, and architecture.

One of his primary interests is language. In his previous exhibition ‘fidelity,’ he also highlighted the rural languages of Malaysia. He is interested in how languages and voice create a memory and how we relate them to each other. For the exhibition, he collected recordings of 24 local dialects and languages that are hardly spoken in Singapore. Through the recordings, he focused on how the languages and voices locate the people socially, geographically, and psychologically.

The exhibition was done with multi-channel sound installations and 24 gestural ink drawings by Jeremy Sharma. Shapes of the ocean, tongues, and vocal cords are found on the paintings. I found the exhibition interesting. Mainly, I am surprised by the way how he interprets languages into arts and music whenever I see his works. It’s not too late. Find his masterpieces filling the whole tunnel of Esplanade!
