Hermès has brought Jeremy Sharma's new work to its aloft which is all about the representation of human voices and their cultures. As a part of school field trip, I visited Aloft at Hermès, in 'Liat Tower' to see the recent presentation of Jeremy Sharma. Aloft is a platform for contemporary artists to explore new, creative expressive forms. Jeremy Sharma is a Singaporean multi-disciplinary artist born in 1977. He is mostly considered as a painter, but has enlarged his artistic field by using video, photography, drawing and installation.

Jeremy’s new work, titled ‘fidelity’, is mainly about recording and discovering human voice as a material to get immersed into some of Southeast Asia’s cultures and history. The unique sound-only presentation focuses on an effective delivery of various human voices and folk musics. “[With fidelity], I am looking at the possibility for a personal narrative in an aural encounter amidst a foreign landscape of languages and songs, and what it means to look for authentic experiences and be part of a changing, connected world,” explains Sharma(Honeycombers, 2018).

In the aloft, there is a room with a round bench in the middle of the room and six speakers around the bench. Almost ten songs were played in the room, and I could hear different voices from different speakers. While in the room and listening to the voices, I could imagine that I was in the community amongst those people who were singing, and I felt calm and relaxed. Also, I felt that somehow I was connected to them even though I could not understand their language. It was a unique experience for me to think about and understand the different communities. The exhibition is open to the public from 17th May 2018 to 19th August 2018. Go ahead and have a unique experience with Hermès!
