It was an early afternoon when I met an iconic stylist, Su Kyeong Seo, at a cafe located in Cheongdam dong, Korea. She has been working with many celebrities, especially K-pop idols. Now, she is one of the most popular stylist whom many idols want to work with. It was a part of my field trip with my classmates. We waited for her at a seminar room inside the cafe. My whole body was literally shaking with an expectation of meeting her. After a while, she came into the room with a bright smile on her face!
After a short introduction, we started an interview with a question “How did you become a stylist?”. She answered that she was originally a fashion designer but she had a chance to work as an assistant with Hye Yeon Han, one of the most influential stylist in Korea. After she graduated, Hye Yeon suggested her to be a stylist because she thought Su Kyeong was potential enough to be a stylist. That’s how she started her career as a stylist. Our following questions were about a process of work. Regarding these questions, she said, “The process is very complicated and there was no specific guide to reference when I first started. I just learned from how my seniors work. That was the only guide.” Then, she added, “Still, there is no guide or programme for a stylist in South East Asia. Thus, I would like to develop a guide for future stylists.”
The interview ended in 30 minutes because she did not have much time to talk. At the end of the interview, she made time for a group photo and selfie even though she was in rush. After the interview, I thought that being a stylist requires a lot of efforts and responsibilities. Now I think styling is not just dressing up somebody. It is more about understanding someone’s personality and finding out the most desired look for him or her, which are followed by much research and efforts.
